Some Basic Sudoku Strategies

While sudoku can be very complex at times especially if you are solving the more difficult puzzles like a killer or samurai sudoku, you don't need "advanced sudoku strategy" or a hundred different tips to still enjoy the game. While it sure does help to know some of the more effective techniques you can still enjoy sudoku just using the basics.

Here is a couple of the more popular ones.

Crosshatching :

This is a basic scanning technique that helps you locate possible candidates by using a process of elimination. You pick a number then draw a line through all of the the rows and columns that have that number, and than scratching out any squares that contain it.. The remaining cells are possible locations for the candidate.  If their is only only one possible location left than it's safe to conclude that the number goes there.

Scanning:

This strategy is just like it sounds, you scan the puzzle looking for possible givens while it doesn't matter where you start I suggest you begin with a number that appears many times as that will mean it wil be easier to solve.

In Sudoku you know that a candidate can only appear once in any row, column, or block so if the number allready appears than you know it can't appear elsewhere in the same row column or block.

With scanning you start with a number and than scan through the puzzle to eliminate cells where it clearly can't appear and thus locate the one cell where it can, Once you have scanned one digit repeat the process for each of the other numbers until you have gone through them all.

While scanning is a very basic sudoku strategy it is still very effective. The advantages are that of it allows you to quickly eliminate the easy candidates and open up possibilities for the others.
